  1. When would a Self-Retracting Lifeline (SRL) be of more benefit than a Lanyard?
    Self-Retracting Lifelines are preferable in many situations, but may be needed in two specific ones. When an attachment point is more than 6' over a person's head due to design, then an SRL is needed. OSHA states that no person may free fall more than 6' thus maximizing the length of a standard lanyard to 6'. At this point an SRL is needed. When the distance from the working platform to the ground is sufficiently small, below 15', then an SRL is needed. A typical shock absorbing lanyard has a shock absorber tear out of 3.5'. This added to the 6' of the lanyard and the attachment point of approximately 4' up the back to your shoulder blades, equals a total clearance required of 13.5', without any room for error. An SRL will typically arrest a fall within 2 to 4' SRLs are also preferred in tight spaces due to the retractable nature of the line. A standard lanyard can get caught on equipment where an SRL would not.

  2. How do you know when to take a SRL out of service?
    SRLs should be taken out of service if during inspection it is found that the cable is frayed, cut or birdcaged, if the webbing is burnt, frayed or cut, if the housing is cracked, if the fall indicating snaphook has been “sprung” or if the unit fails to lock when the cable or web is pulled sharply.

  3. How do you know when to take Harnesses and Lanyards out of service?
    Harnesses and Lanyards need to be inspected each time before use. Check the webbing for frays and tears, loose stitching, cracks in hardware and D-Rings. If anything seems to be stressed or damaged, take it out of service and a competent person will cut it up and destroy it.

  4. What is the lifetime of a harness?
    Most harnesses have a life of 5 years due to UV and environmental damage. If you document the date you first use the harness then the 5 years starts at that date. If you do not document it, or if the documentation is lost, then the harness needs to be destroyed 5 years from the date of manufacturer that is found on the harness label.

  5. Harness Size: How do you find the perfect harness for you?
    Harnesses are designed with many features to help users find a comfortable fit. Features include: adjustable straps, grommet legs, standard sizes of S M L XL all direct you to the best fit.

  6. Temporary systems and Permanent Installations: Why you would want one type?
    Typically temporary systems function for workers that move often and have fall protection equipment at multiple locations and job sites.

    Permanent Installations provide fall protection for workers in the location of the system. The fall protection equipment is always ready for use as often as the task requires without requiring the time to set up like the temporary systems.

  7. Why is it important to Recertify Engineered Systems?
    Fall Protection equipment has mechanical moving parts. Hy-Safe designs fall protection systems to be as free of moving parts as possible, yet it is not avoidable. These moving parts need to be inspected to ensure that they are in proper working order Also, there are unreported falls or horseplay that occur that could potentially damage the system. If this damage is sever enough, then the system may not function properly. This is where recertification upholds the integrity of our engineered systems and keeps them well maintained and ready to perform the task it was installed to do: save lives.

  8. Why is it important to Recertify Self Retracting Lifelines (SRL)?
    SRL's are mechanical machines with many moving parts inside, including a breaking mechanism. When typical work environments include dust, grime, sugars, flours and other substances, the moving parts of the SRL have the potential to "gunk up" and not perform to its expectations. A recertification will clean the inside of your SRL as well as look for wear and tear. Another reason to have your SRLs recertified is that unknown damage could have occurred to your unit. Not all falls are reported and there can be substantial horseplay in some environments that can lead to damage. That is why it is important to get your SRL's into a Recertification Program to keep the mechanism's clean and functioning 100% at all times.
